patmack.......I have not been to Alaska yet but wanted to welcome you to CLF!! You will find a great bunch of cruisers here who are willing to answer or help you to find an answer for just about anything and have fun while doing it too!

Sit back, and look around. ENJOY! We all love cruising!

You may want to ask this in the cruise excursion portion of the site, specifically Alaska. I think you will get more repsonses to your question.

Hi Patmack and welcome to CLF.
I took my 2 grandsons (age 5 & 71/2) to Alaska last year. We did the helicopter/dogsled excursion. The boys loved it. The older one was allowed to stand with his father during part of the run. The younger one was allowed to give the command to the dogs to go (sorry, secret word, he wouldn't tell us.)
It is pricey but it was well worth it. You get a beautiful tour over the glaciers and then arrive at the camp. You're given instructions for the run and then you meet your "driver" and the dogs. You are partnered up, kind of piggy-backed. I was in one sled with my DIL driving. We were hooked with a pro who had one grandson. My son and other grandson were hooked with another pro.
Some owners use this time to train the dogs so you must have permission to approach the dogs. For the most part they are very well trained and friendly.
There is an age limit because they want the kids at a certain height. My 5 yr old made it because he's very tall for his age but I couldn't get a ticket for him until we were on the ship.
The ride is bumpy but not something that is so bad you can't tolerate it.
I have also done a glacier hike which is another great excursion.
