We sailed on Veendam in December of '99. This was the first cruise after Bob's heart attack a year before. It holds fond memories, but I'm not sure I like the changes mentioned. Looks like they are out draw in younger cruisers with her changes.
We sailed Veendam twice and it was never my favorite ship. The first time, I got Noro and the second time our cabin was never cooler than about 80 degrees. THat being said, I would have still sailed her again, as I liked the size and over all feel of the ship. Am I understanding correctly that the plan was to do this to all the ships? Yuck! I like the classic lines of a cruise ship and the new and "improved" Veendam doesn't have them any more.

So many seem to have been victums of Noro on Veendam! Just to add to the list, my DH was.
While they were making all of these changes to Veendam, really hope they cleaned those Gift Shops!
Good Grief! Things beyond the front facings were covered with dust! We got on Veendam when it was Code Red and everything was supposed to have been completely sanitized -- Not the Gift Shops!

Somebody else who got Noro on HAL! I sympathize with you Jennifer. It probably was no more pleasant for you than it was for me.

It was quite a long time ago, before they had a plan about quarantine and things like that. I remember calling the nurse on call and being offered pepto....if I wanted to pay for it. We were docked in Jamaica that day and DH thought pepto would do the trick too. He set off on a taxi ride to get some and it ended up costing him about $50. As you know....pepto didn't quite cut it. I am a young and healthy person and that Noro was the worst thing I ever experienced. I can see how it could kill someone who is already not in the best of health. Awful stuff!!
Since that episode, we bring along the antiseptic wipes and wipe down the door handles, remotes, sink and anything that will hold still long enough for a wipe down as soon as we board. We also use them on the plane, in the hotel etc. I think DH bathes in purell. Probably a bit over the top, but I never want to deal with Noro again.
Jennifer. Mine was similar. Both ends and I was fighting to decide what to do first. Definitely not the most pleasant thing in the world.
My biggest complaint after the first day of being sick as a dog was what to do during those moments that I was feeling poor instead of totally ready to die. I watched lots of TV but even that got stale after a while.
