Wow! Nice!
One of the reasons I chose Serenade this year over Radiance was the fact that Serenade was sailing through Misty Fjords. In 05 Serenade and Radiance were sailing the exact same 7 day route out of Vancouver, except that Radiance sailed Saturday and Serenade sailed Sunday and Serenade went through Misty Fjords.
Misty Fjords is incredibly beautiful. And we even saw a bear on Bear Beach.
Anyhow, a lot of people were disappointed with the 06 schedule when it initially came out because RCI had extended time in Ketchikan and removed the sailing through Misty Fjords. Many people speculated that the reason for this was because RCI wanted to make more money by selling RCI shore excursions.
I'm glad to hear that they realized the error of their ways and have added Misty Fjords back on the schedule.
There are several things you could do in Ketchikan. If you are looking to save some money, then this is definitely a town where you could skip the shore excursion and explore on your own. Ketchikan is a big shopping town. You could easily walk from the pier the 3-4 blocks to Creek Street which is Ketchikan's former Red Light district. You can take a tour of Dolly's house or just do some shopping there. You can also take a funicular for $2 roundtrip to the top of Cape Fox Lodge. You get a good view of Ketchikan and also there is a small totem pole park there with about 5 totem poles you can look at.
If you're interested in Native culture, this is also the city for it. there are more totem poles in Ketchikan than anywhere else in the world. You can take a not too expensive trip to either Saxman Native Village where you can see totem poles and also a Native Tlingit performance or you can take a trip to Totem Bight State Park.
If you love to fish and like salmon, Ketchikan is also the place to do that.
Finally, if you don't mind spending some money, Ketchikan is really the place to go bear watching. You're going late enough in the season that the bears are active and you should have a good chance of seeing them. But bear watching is VERY EXPENSIVE!
