Helicopter and Dog Sled Tour from Juneau -- This is a "once in a lifetime" tour. You will fly by helicopter over the Juneau Ice Field to the dog camp. You will share this experience with 80 Alaskan huskies, and you will ride by dog sled with a team of huskies loping across the ancient snowfields nestled among the peaks of the vast Juneau Icefield.

Is a good site for info on Juneau.....I ordered a free travel planner from this site...and a couple of days later...it was here....wow.
Although the planner is for 2005...it does give lots and lots of great ideas for excursions etc in Juneau...and beautiful pics.

Do you guys mind if I butt in and give you some suggestions?

Click on this link - I created a thread about Juneau and some of the most popular activities in this city!

If you at all were thinking about whale watching on the cruise, this is the place to do it. There is a very reputable company, Capt Larry and Orca Enterprises that runs tours. You can also get tours from your ship. You drive out about 20 minutes to Auke Bay. Its virtually guaranteed that you'll see a whale. And if you're lucky, you'll even see Orcas!!!

Also this is also a good city to do helicopter glacier flightseeing trips or even dog sledding trips. Juneau is right in the middle of the Juneau Icefields, some of the largest icefields in the world. Helicopter flightseeing with a glacier landing is a great way to see it up close and personal!

For a cheaper alternative, when you get off the ship, you can purchase $5 one way tickets to the Visitor's Center at Mendenhall Glacier. The visitors center is about 1 mile fromo the face of the glacier itself with walking trails that will put you even closer. Its a great way to see a glacier up close.

Or you can take a ride up the Mt. Roberts Tram. You get get a great view of Juneau and there are walking trails back there. I beleive a tram ticket costs you around $25

Alisa... .you are more than welcome here...you have such a vast knowledge with regard to Alaska....and we would love for you to post and let us know what you think about Excursions or any tips etc you can give us about Alaska.

Admittedly for me it will be the cheaper excursions....unless of course I win on the lottery before then.

    Many thanks

    Not a problem Liz.

That $5 one way trip, $10 roundtrip out to Mendenhall is a great excursion. You get a close up view of the glacier. At the visitors center they haul in and display for everyone to touch and see a large iceberg so you can touch the glacier so to speak.

Also, you can walk down some trails to the edge of the lake that is formed from the run off and melting of the glacier. Sometimes you can even see icebergs that have washed up along the shore line...

I remember the bus that did the $10 tour, pretty much a school bus.
It got you there and back though at a great price. The driver gave a pretty fair narration during the ride too.

Here's a picture from my whale watching trip out of Auke Bay in Juneau in July 2003

you can clearly see an Orca (Killer whale) ... at one point the group of 3 whales was much closer than this, but alas I never got a picture!
