Is Detroit going to become a a Major Cruise Port?

Thanks to a new port facility being developed on the Detroit River, officials have begun to redefine Detroit as a Midwestern cruise destination port.

The $21-million Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority headquarters and customs facility is to include a dock for cruise ships and water taxis.

The facility, now under construction, should be finished in late 2010.

The city is getting $7.1 million in federal recovery money for the passenger terminal and public dock on the Detroit River.

OK---I haven't looked at a map to put this into perspective.........
From where would the cruise ships sail into Detroit and how long to traverse the distance from the ocean?
How large a ship would this new cruise facility be able to handle?

Could open up a whole new vista for cruising from that area.....lure more folks into the cruising market.

Great Lakes cruises go out of Chicago. They all seemed rather expensive when I checked into taking one.

Arrow Detroit Cruise Port - Opens July 2011

Detroit is opening its new Cruise Port on July 18, 2011.

There are tons of great venues in Detroit, including "The Henry Ford" - 20 minute drive to Dearborn, The Ford Factory, the "Detroit Institute of Arts", Eastern Market-on the weekends, The GM World HQ, Fisher Building, The Guardian Building, Greek-Town, various beautiful casinos etc., Science Center, African History Museum, Mo-Town Records and don’t forget the mansions in Gross Point, like the estate of Edsel Ford. I’ve cruised to many ports with a lot less to offer. Can’t wait unit the Cruise Ships start coming in.
