    Hotels in London

Can anyone recommend a hotel in London for a few nights ? Clean and basic is all we need.

Last few times we have used Travelodge, they are basic, with tea/coffee making equipment, beds are comfortable.

Many hotel in London are pricey and dingy and very old, unless you want to pay the earth for a nigths sleep so I have included the three best budget chain.

I can only recommend whether they come to your standard that’s a different matter.

Eating in London is also exspensive, we either go to Greenwich or Hamersmith using a chain in the UK. Beer is and drinks are cheap, so is food. One drawback for all you people the other side of the pond, you pay for your drinks and meals before you get them. No tipping.

    Thanks Norman,
All we require is clean, especially the bathroom, comfort will be on the QM2 going back.
Can you mention specific locations you have been happy with ?

Concerning this tipping business. Surely when you go to the bar and order a pint do you not also slip the barmaid a pound after paying ? I used to do that even before I emigrated ?

Tower Bridge earlier this year with Travelodge is the latest we stayed in. About a five minute walk from the Tower and the bridge.

We used to use Airmiles which we get with our shopping to book our London hotels, but found the budget ones cheaper and better.

Tipping at a bar has disappeared a long time ago with the escalating price of drinks in the UK. Anyway I’m only a poor pensioner.

Tip if the service is good, but tipping is not so widely observed in the UK as in North America.

Tower Bridge would be a great location. Just checked the rates for next May at 75 pound a night it sounds a deal . Is that what you remember ?

That’s about what we paid, saw the rate and snapped it up. Had a shock when we got to the room, it was parallel to a railway line. Room was sound proofed.
It’s near to bus routes, Dockland Light railway and the tube.

You are not restricted to how much tea or coffee, they will give you what you want at the Reception.

I think you realise Tony what you pay very little for in the UK you can get a suite for the same money in the States.

Yes but that price and location is very good I think as long as it is clean. You found this particular one OK ? We will stay about five days. Do they give real milk with the tea or the powdered stuff ?

Afraid Tony it’s the powdered stuff, but if you have a drink out in the day you can always borrow a sachet or two of milk to take back with you.

The Travelodge near to Tower Bridge, is shown on the map below. Between five to ten minutes walk to the Tower and Tower Bridge.

Must point out I have marked the Dockland Light Railway, that run by the side of a main railwayline. Our room was facing the railway, advert warns you about this and guests could be disturbered by noise. Our room was completely soundproofed and would ask for the same room location again and no noise.

On leaving the tube station follow the signs to Dockland Light Railway, go under the railway bridge and turn right, hotel is on the right side of the road about 50 yards.

St Katherine Docks is a very nice area, they have now developed it with shops and restaraunts.

As I have said the hotel is clean and basic, and affordable. Many in London are expensive, and very old properties, and no elevators. This one suited our needs.

Hotels in UK are nothing like you find in the States, unless you are loaded with money.

You are giving directions from the Tower Hill Tube station I take it ? There is one at Aldgate is that further away ? I guess you can't open the window then because of the railway noise ? Is it air conditioned ?
Where I lived in Manchester from 0 till aged 18 years or so we lived opposite a railway line
