Lodging in the UK

B&Bs in the States tend to be less common than in the UK so as Americans we don't immediately think of using them when we travel. They can provide a less expensive and often more spacious accommodations.

If you are fortunate enough to spend some time in Scotland prior to or after a cruise, do try to find a five star b&b. Rated by the Scottish Tourist Board, these accommodations are wonderful.

We spent a few nights at the Arden Country House in the outskirts of Linlithgow last month in a huge ground floor room that had lovely amenities, marvelous cooked to order breakfasts and free internet. All for 80 pounds a night.

The rating system in England is not the same one that is used in Scotland. We stayed in a five star b&b in Canterbury that couldn't hold a candle to the ones in Scotland, but still provided bigger rooms than most of the hotels. However, it was much pricier at 125 pounds.

B&Bs can be found using Google, TripAdvisor or the Auto Club. There is a lot to be said for staying with a host who knows the area and clearly wants to help you enjoy it.

Great suggestion. I have been looking for a place to stay for 3-4 nights while in Edinburgh next April and found "Ardmor House". Does anyone have information on this place? Fodor ranks it very highly.

Yep, dead posh.

Scottish Tourist Board now called visitscotland if anyone's googling.

two hotel recommendations for London:

City Inn: modern, near Parliament and Tate Museum; very clean, well run.

London Elizabeth, off of Hyde Park, small, will remind you in a good way of Fawlty Towers, but very personal, nice little restaurant, a nice and even smaller bar, great service, great location. Was where the Polish Air Force stayed in WW2. Less expensive than City Inn, has some nice deals in the off season too.

Both are convenient to Tube; both have typical small hotel rooms, although London E's bathrooms are a bit bigger than the City Inn, they do have interesting baths. If you plan on watching TV, go to City Inn, they have satellite. London e's TV leaves a lot to be desired, but I didn't go to London to watch TV.
