In the UK the 'proper' way to eat fish and chips is out of a newspaper package, yesterday's news of course. Oh and do they eat whelks, cockles and jellied eels in the USA? I imagine not.Well, even the newspapers ain't wot they useter be!! Do YOU eat whelks, cockles and jellied eels up in the north? Thought the EEC stopped us catching anything more than flu!!

Now chips is another matter. I grew up in the south, where you ate them with salt and vinegar. Then I moved to Lancashire and found people eating them with gravy or curry sauce. Or mayonaise. I did not succomb to such strange habits, it's salt'n'vinegar or nothing, for me. Yuck, HAS to be salt'n'vinegar - we agree on that one!!!

I will investigate Red Rose tea bags, sounds promising. I don't understand the bit about Americans not boiling water properly, two of you have mentioned that. What is a tea kettle, for instance? Surely a kettle is a kettle is a kettle, and the only way to boil water is to bring it to boiling point? Yes, I never quite got it either - but boiling water in Florida doesn't often seem to happen!! Electric kettles are hard to come by, but do exist. I think we bought ours in Bed, Bath and Beyond!!!

We got our electric kettle 20 years ago on a trip to Winnipeg, Canada. Great investment. I don't know if it is any better but it was sure more convenient and the only way to get hot water- until we got the water delivery service with a hot and cold tap.

We discovered the English section in our Tom Thumb store tucked between the Asian and Mexican food sections. Some of the items we fondly remembered from out trip to England. Especially spotted dick (love that name)

The only thing that is good on french fries (i.e. chips) is salt- I save the vinegar for the fish.

We managed to find an electric kettle here and that has helped considerably. Here they don't boil the water 'proper like' and that's part of the problem. And then she discovered Red Rose tea bags. Very acceptable apparently!!! Not the best, but according to Mum - satisfactory!!

You can buy M&S around here.

We now have a small British section in our Publix Supermarket and can get Piccallili!! Wowee!!! By the way, the Walkers Shortbread you buy here don't taste the same as the Walkers shortbread in Ingerland. And Publix also have Heinz Baked Beans at an exorbitant price of course!! And Heinz Tomato Soup - all in the British Section of course.

Walkers shortbread is another item you can buy here.
I guess it is all a matter of region where you can buy things here.

Spotted dick - yikes! Tastes just as bad as it sounds. I suppose you like roly-poly pudding, tapioca and soggy trifle too. What about tripe and black pudding and pigs trotters?

That might explain it, the west valley area gets the dregs from the towns closer to the mountains!
