UK Castles

Rather than contribute to a case of the dreaded thread drift by waxing some eloquents on castles in England and Scotland on an existing thread, I thought I'd start a new one.

My favorite is Stirling Castle, in Scotland. Both Stirling and Edinburgh Castle, another favorite, sit atop hills providing access in only one direction. You can really get a sense of how defensible they must have been.

During our September trip this year we got to make a stop at Warwick Castle. They have added a little Madame Tusand's flavor to it in the form of wax statues. On the plus side, they do make it easier to visualize what life was like during different eras, on the minus side they make it harder to simply imagine life in earlier times and give a commercial feel to an historic site.

We arrived early on a week day and had the Castle to ourselves for the first hour. It was lovely. And, it is not far from Stratford.

Susan,

so glad you liked Stirling Castle. The castle contains my Regimental Headquarers and museum (The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) and used to be the Regimental training depot. I was born twelve miles to the east of Stirling in a village called Dollar (yes really!) which incidentally also has a very picturesque castle called Castle Campbell.

This is Lancaster Castle, not a place you would want to stay, as part of it is used as law court and a prison. . Sections are open the the public and it is well worth a visit.
