Ancient Ruins

In your opinion, where are the best ancient ruins to be found? why?

Rome, Athens, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Akrotiri, Delos, Delphi, anywhere else?

Ephesus in Turkey without a doubt! Pompeii is also good. Rome-not so good, Delphi a waste of time. Herculeum is good but if you only have time for one of the two sites I would stay with Pompeii. Everyone, who can, should see the Acropolis at Athens, but note, I said "can"-it is very strenious climb up the mountain (silly things, they didn;t have escalators back then!)

Next cruise, July 12-26, 2008. NCL Jade 13 night cruise around the British Isles, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris.

I hope the cruise actually makes the stop at Kusadasi. I've heard such great things about Ephesus. When I first booked the cruise, this was the port I was least looking forward too. But so many people have said that it was such a great surprise.

Let's hope the safety issue doesnt remain an issue and we can experience this wonderful port!

Thanks for the help!

I will be seeing most of those places VERY soon!!

I'll be in Rome next Monday, Pompeii on Tuesday, Kusadasi (Ephesus) on Saturday and Athens on Sunday. And a little Florence, Sicily and Rhodes thrown in for fun. I am so glad to hear everybody say these are great sites...I can't wait to see them in person!

I'll do a trip report with photos when I get back...

Here's a photo of one tiny part of Ephesus in Turkey. This is an area where they think a whole group of ancient homes is right behind those doorways, they just haven't dug it all out yet....they figure they have about 10% done. I agree, Ephesus is awesome and probably the best ancient site anywhere! I have 408 photos from our trip and a bunch from Ephesus...I am still going through them all!

THL...someone I knew (who owns and trains camels) just got knocked (bucked is more like it!) off his own camel while at full stance! He ended up with some head injury & got all scraped up. You're lucky that your's was more tame!!! They can really do some damage!!
