Yes, it IS a very long, hot pier! They just go back and forth...when we were there it was a very short wait at both ends.
They used vans and I suppose if there were a lot of people wanting to get from point A to point B at the same time it might be a longer wait.
Think, we'll plan to take some sort of tour for the first sailing. On the return stop there not sure yet....
Sure hope the tour meets at the ship and not the end of the pier.

In Puntaremas there is just one Trolley Train that constantly makes the trip back and forth from the ship. Be warned -- one time it shut down from Noon until 1 for lunch. We walk into town -- it isn;t that bad of a walk. Then catch thr Trolley Train to return back to the ship.
All the tour buses do come down the pier to the ship and they also return the passengers directly back to the ship. It wasn't like that years ago when we first stopped there. At the end of the excursions the buses dropped everyone off right at the gates.
If you go about a block from the main vendor area, there is a restaurant on the beach that also has a bar -- but -- truthfully -- it didn;t look that great.

I do believe the venders have extended their booths to the area you are talking about. There were LOTS of booths set up past the area that had concrete and a walkway. These were directly on the sandy ground.
We walked about 3 blocks or so to the left of the pier and saw nothing directly on the beach. If the venders were not there the eating places (there were a couple) would have had an unobstructed beach view. But the beach there isn't very good, I'm sorry to say.
Thanks for the report Char. I loved the picture of you and Bob.
We were in Puntarenas in 2003 but I have no memory of that long pier. What I do remember is a tour that we took on the river, like going through a jungle with lots of birds and further along just hordes of crockadials. Really enjoyed that tour.
