You go in a taxi (4 people per taxi max) through the mountains (which, per our driver, is actually an on-the-edge of the Asa Wright Rain Forest) to get to the beach. Lots of photo opts of the harbor and ship below.
It's a magnificent drive! Everything is GREEN ... very possible shade of green ... from the darkest black/blue greens to the lightest silver greens! There were gentle showers several times which made looking down at the sunny coastline and beaches even more interesting.
Maracus Beach is a very pretty palm lined but rustic beach which is on the Atlantic so there are real waves. Nice clean gently sloping even beach -- no adrupt drop-offs! We rented beach chairs, bought a couple of bottles of beer ( ok ... more than a couple), and had a great time!
Our taxi driver was The Best! He took us through a "gated community" (he knew the security guard). Couldn't help but notice that even within the security gates every one of these large houses still had security bars on all windows.... Also, as we requested, he drove us thought the heart of the city where normal folks shop, work, and play. Quite a lively place!
Honestly, it's not a place to be wandering around alone. Find a Ship's tour or a good taxi!
At the cruise terminal there's a vendor market with T-Shirts, etc. with the nicest "non-pushy" vendors. We bought some coffee.
Please do SOMETHING in Trinidad! It's a beautiful island!
I was going to write about our stops in Trinidad but they are nothing compared to yours. The first time we were there we did the general island and city which was great to introdude us to Trinidad.
The next time we were there we went out to St Benedict Monastery. We didn't see much of the monastery -- walked by the buildings and visited a museum. At the end of the tour we went to the main guest house where we had all kinds of pasteries and a couple of different kinds of tea and drinks. We chose to sit out on the porch and watch all the birds (many varities) and an anteater on the ground heading somewhere.
The first mini bus left about 45 minutes ahead of us. We were only about 5 minutes on the road when our mini van began to develop problems -- the engine sounded like it was going to die any time. Our driver called the other van and they slowed up and waited for us. It should have been about 1/2 hour drivr back to the ship. But with whatever was wrong with our engine, it turned into an hour drive. The other van stayed right with us. Can you imagine if we all had to try to squeeze into 1 van??
All 36 (total 2 vans) got back to the ship 5 minutes before sail time.

Wow, I'm glad LuLu and Yonnie loved Trinidad. For those who do not know, I was born in Trinidad, and emigrated to the US, specificly, Florida in 1983. Lots of green as rainfall is abundant.
LuLu, Maracas Bay is on the North Coast and the water there is part of the Caribbean Sea. The Atlantic Ocean is on the east coast. Glad you got to drive thru downtown Port-of-Spain. Did you drive past the Red House, where the Houses of Parliment are located, the Hall of Justice, which houses the Courts, Woodford Sq, etc?
Yonnie, Mt St Benedict is the Catholic Monestary, and is in the town of St Augustine in the mountains of the Northern Range.
Thanks for all the great information!! I would love to travel there some time!!
Are there many itineraries that include Trinidad?
I recall HAL visited there in 1999, but don't recall them offering any present itineraries with it as a port.
