Good point, unfortunately there is not anything else you can do.

With servce charges and prepaid tips onboard and service charges and taxes in the countries we visit, someone will have to do something very special to get and extra tip from me. Lee

If the ship goes where you want to go when you want to go, then go.

Any time we were in Europe, we tipped!

Somehow, it just doesn't seem right to us to NOT tip!

Lulu, you are very right.
Its rude not to tip if you have gotten good service.
People are getting so cheap these days that it seem like such a big deal to part with a few $$$ or Euros for the service they recive.

Not many of these waiters earn a great sallary. Service charge that is added to the bills are for most of the time not given to the staff but kept by the establisment.

I doubt very much that any of us will go bankrupt if we give between 10-20% tips to service staff.
If we can afford to travel we can afford to give tip also. If you dont, stay at home and serve yourself

So the answer to the question is: YES, YOU DO NEED TO PAY TIPS IN EUROPE.

And that sums it up pretty good, Lars! Just wish the cruise lines were more honest about it and stated the tips when they quote the price of cruises.
