That would be doubly the trouble if you only have a few hours every few weeks to run such an errand.
What do you mean? Are there stores that will not take a $50 bill? Why not?

It would be nice if the cruise ship had a collection point for coins. They could sort out the coins from different countries and donate them to a worthy cause.

I have never had a problem shopping with a $50 bill or a $100 bill for that matter. They just use that funny brown pen, but they take them, pretty fast out of my hand too!

My thought was that no exchanging of currency would be needed by the crew of the ship, they could use/spend the local currency on the island where it's their local currency?

I also thought that cruise ships have a currency exchange onboard, I know not for coins, but for notes/bills? Am I missing something?

Ireland no longer has their own currency? If that's the case, drat! I have some Irish currency from a trip in 2000.

If you have children or grandchildren (or nieces or nephews) you can give them the coins for Show and Tell.

Darn! I meant southern where the currency was Irish Punt, I think that's what it was called? I knew I should have made it back there faster

Actually ... NOW ... I have a better thing to do!

My grandchildren's school does a Foreign Currency Fund Drive each year. Basically, they ask their family and friends of the family to donate any foreign currency they just happened to have from a trip out of the country.

This SPRING they raised almost $3,000 once exchanged to US Dollars.
