HEY! It's not a sad thing, it's something to be proud of !! Actually I didn't grow up in Texas so I don't have the accent, even though I do speak the language and understand all the little expressions. I can turn the accent off and on when I need to, though. And sometimes you need to...like at cattle auctions with a bunch of old timers.

Some of the expressions still surprise me. The first time my DH said "tend to your own knitting" I laughed and laughed and accused him of making that one up. I went on the internet to prove there was no such thing...which is how I found the list that started this thread...and I'll be damned, there it was!

I was watching a National Geographic show on the history of accents in America and they said there was a University study that showed that everybody is gradually heading toward the Southern accent...little by little...whether they know it (or like it) or not. They said it was because it's a comfortable way to speak. It is easier to say "goin" to the store than "going" with a hard 'g' at the end and once you do it for a while it becomes sorta natural!
