Smile Tampa Restaurants

This is one of my favorite subjects.
  • Bern's Steakhouse - Truly a Tampa tradition for many years. This is a unique dining experience, with excellence in food and service. This isn't a cheap place to eat, but it's not extremely expensive either. Presidents of the US, national, state, and local policital figures, movie stars, business people, and regular locals eat here. We have reserved this place of anniversaries in the past, since it's too expensive for routine Saturday night dining, eat least for us. The wine cellar is huge, with vintages going back a long, long time. They have a huge fish tank which holds live fish until needed for orders. They grow their own vegatables and, as I recall, their meat as well. The restaurant was founded by Bern Laxer, and is currently operated by his children. This is located on S. Howard Avenue in Tampa. Web site is: http://www.bernssteakhouse.com/ Reservations are a must.
  • Columbia Restaurant - Another unique Tampa dining experience, for 100 yrs. Great Spanish food, service, and atmosphere. This is located at E. 7th Ave (Broadway) at 21st St. in the Ybor City Latin District. Web site is: http://www.columbiarestaurant.com/ybor.asp
For anyone visiting Tampa, wanting a locally unique dining experience, it would be one of the above.

I'll monitor this thread. If you have questions, ask. I've worked in and around the Tampa area for 35 yrs, and was born just E. of Tampa a little over 50 yrs ago. I know about lots of good places to eat in Tampa - some very nice, some not so nice, but all with great food.

Ken

Arrow There are also several places to eat

at International Mall which isn't to far from the airport and several of the hotel's in the area.
In fact, you'll most likely be able to see it as your landing/taxing into Tampa.
They have the CheeseCake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen and several other nice restaurant's on Bay Walk or you can also find several places in their food court. It's a neat mall to spend some time in if you want to do some shopping - very upscale stores. If you stop by the conceirge desk on the lower level you can get a shopping passport that is good for that day. They normally have some nice offer's in it.

You also aren't far from Westshore Mall where there is a great place called Maggiano's (Italian food) and a P.F. Chang's.

I'll give a hearty "Hear! Hear!" for Columbia.

My memory for restaurant names is not good, but I always remember good food. And I've had lots of good food in Tampa. There seem to be numerous good restaurants in the area, and they are independents (as mentioned by Cracker Ken) and chains (as mentioned by Hugger).

Incidentally, "Cracker Ken's" screen name reminded me of a Cracker-style restaurant along Bay Shore Drive just opposite the inner harbor, nearly downtown. I wish I could remember the name.

Thanks, Rick. We're getting excited. We got our tickets and other documents this week. Of 134 names on the passenger list, 26 are from Florida. It does not appear to be a group, per se, because they are from all over the state. California is second with 17, and then, tied with Michigan, us 9 Pennsylvanians make the third largest contingent.

Yesterday, I was at Ollies, a retailer of distressed and abandoned merchandise, (Slogan: We sell good stuff cheap) and saw the 2005 Frommer's Guide to Vienna and the Danube Valley. Instead of the $16.99 on line or from Barnes and Noble, I got it for $3.99.

I am looking for some suggestions on where the 'locals' eat in Tampa, you know, the "Ma and Pa" restaurants.

Do you kow of any?

Thanks

Marion
