    Helmet Dive in St Thomas

I enjoyed this excursion, but if you are an expierenced diver it may be a bit tame for you. Water booties and gloves are provided. A helmet sits on your shoulders and air is pumped in. The weight of the helmet keeps you underwater. It is done in Coral World and the price of the dive includes admission to the rest of the park. We were under water for approx 25 minutes walking along a path aided by a chain rail. Many fish were very near to look at and take pictures. The instructors would find and let you hold other creatures.

They pushed hard about tipping the divers which was uncomfortable. Otherwise a great time was had by all.

    Thumbs up

Sounds like a really neat time for a non-diver like me. I am big on snorkeling and swimming, but have never ventured into diving.
This sounds like just the ticket!
I have a snorkel excursion planned for my upcoming visit to St Thomas, but am definitely gonna keep THIS in mond for a future visit!

Thanks so much for the information!

This would be just right for you it sounds. It was a bit different being able to breathe down there, but it was fun. The coral could have been a bit more colorful IMO.

Is that the same as BOB, or is BOB different? How heavy are the helmets that they keep you underwater? I think that would make me panic.....

ETA: Nevermind -- I saw the thread on BOB and this is definitely different. My guys want to do BOB -- I think. I'll have to show them the threads and see what they say.

They are 75 lbs on the surface, only 10 lbs underwater. They place it on you as you are going down a ladder so it is easy. They pump in over 60 lbs of air pressure.

Not bad at all. As you get near the bottom they told you to equalize the pressure just like you would when you are on a plane by yawning etc. You must give them the OK that you were able to pop your ears. You are only 15-20 underwater.
