As we have not booked an excursion for this port, can anyone make recommendations (thought we would stay round the port area).

Just grab a ride to the downtown area. Lots of window shopping and some decent food to be had. If I remember correctlythe fare is about $4 pp.

You should also know that there are really two piers in Charlotte Amalie. The original is right at Havensight Mall (shops everywhere!) and somewhat closer to "downtown." I'd take the skyride up to Paradise Point, which overlooks the main harbor - beautiful view and you an sit and have a beer, if that intrigues you!.
The newer pier is at Crown Bay. A little further from downtown, and not a h*** of a lot in the immediate area, other than the shops comprising part of the whole complex.
Taxis easily available and probably $4-$5 to town, as stated.
