St Thomas - Alcohol

Do any of you buy your quota of alcohol and bring it home from St Thomas?

I was on the Caribbean Princess 9/3. When in St. Thomas I purchased 9 bottles of booze. 5 Stoli's, 3 Kahula, one Johnnie Walker Black.

When I went to claim my overages to customs they asked where it was purchased. I replied St. Thomas. From there you are allowed to bring back 4 bottles of booze and one island bottle of booze.(made in that island). So I was suppose to pay excess taxes, but he said because I was so nice and honest he would not charge me.

If purchased in St. Maarten, you are only allowed one bottle without having to pay any excess taxes.

For those of you who bring back cigarettes, I believe it is St Thomas that has an extra duty-free allotment for cigarettes - 5 per person, in addition to the one per person that you can purchase on the ship.

There was a time when we bought alcohol in the islands and brought it back to the states. But now with the new flying regulations we can no longer do that. Even in first class we have a choice of a carry-on or box of booze - not both.

And for us to bring alcohol home was a great deal. We have a state liquor control board and our prices are REALLY high.

Aaaaahhh yes, but if you buy Guavaberry liquor or any liquor made IN St. Maartin by St. Maartin, there is no limit becaase it's a "handicraft." Swear. Brought back two cases of the stuff. MmmmmM. Now that was 4 years ago, I would hate to think that has changed.....
