Blizzard, the synagogue is similar in some ways but it is a bit different. It is smaller and less ornate, but it is still very Sephardic in design: the wooden ark, the sand on the floor, the seating.

Today, we went to the Portuguese-Israelite Synagogue in Amsterdam, which was basically the sponsor for these congregations, and it has the same design as well, but is much larger. Although the Jewish community that lived near it was nearly eradicated in WWII, both the building and the community have come back to life.

I recall that the one in St Thomas was also Sephardic.
We were married in a Sephardic synagogue but it did not have sand on the floor.
There is a large Sephardic population in Seattle.

Char - Glad I was able to help. I remember going there as a kid for Fridy night services when we were on the island. My wife and I went back for a visit on our Honeymoon and first anniversary.

We are thinking about joining, just haven't gotten around to it. ( I know that sounds bad)
