We like to take the ferry to St John, the beaches aren't as crowded.

You didn't say what you're shopping for, but if it's jewelry my favorite store in St Thomas is Cardow. Everything I've ever bought there has been appraised for more than I payed for it. They have a great clearance section in the back.

We liked Sapphire Beach. It has a resort on it that allows you to use their facilities to change, they have a bar and food and snorkel rentals. Great beach, but more crowded than any on St. John.

Ok, shhhh....this is a secret I'll share with the board...

Take a taxi from the port to Secret Cove.
Any driver should know where it is.
When we got into the cab, we asked the driver to take us to an uncrowded beach with good swimming and snorkeling.

And Secret Cove was the perfect place!

It is a cove, so it's not a long, broad beach.
There is a small hotel, a restaurant, and a bar...and clean restrooms.
There are houses overlooking the cove.

But we found it quiet, clean, uncrowded. The snorkeling was good, and there is a friendly, reasonable rental facility. They sell snacks there to.

I don't remember how much the taxi was, but divided between four of us, the fare wasn't much.
We asked the driver to be back at a certain time to pick us up, and he showed up exactly on time.

    Remember....it's a secret....

We had a great time at Sapphire Beach too, but Kyle's Secret Cove sounds pretty cool.

I really enjoyed Megans Bay beach but it is crowded at times. Still had a great time there. Last Dec did a ship tour to Emerald Beach. It is conneted to a Best Western hotel so quite private and beautiful. Also has a good outside bar with yummy drinks. And a couple friendly iguannas to boot,
As far as shopping is concerned, St Thomas is great. Right on main street with a tent city with many vendors right before you get to main street. I like to buy swimsuit coverups there, I use them as sun dress around the house during the summer.

I like Cardow jewelers the best for the higher buck places, although I have had many good deals there on jewelry with appraisals almost double what I paid on some items. Have also had good jewelry deals at some of the smaller stores.

I usually go to a beach in the am and shop in the pm, enjoy!

Does sapphire beach have a place for buying souveniers,t-shirts etc...

or do we have to go into town?
Is sapphire beach an excursion thru carnival or do we just hop a taxi?

    Thanks for the suggestions

Sorry can't help you with that as have never been to sapphire beach. I do think I have seen it in a list of tours with the ship though.

Sapphire beach does not have tons of shops. There is 1 small shop from what I recall. There is a hotel there, but I don't remember the name . It sits far back.

You can rent umbrellas and beach chairs. There is a snack bar but it is not cheap. There is also a bar where you can buy drinks.

It is not an excursion through any cruise lines. It is at the far end of the island. Yes, you can get there by taxi.

Trunk Bay is wonderful for snorkeling and swimming. It's actually on one of those inevitable LISTS of the top 10 beaches - I forget whose.

Here are some PICS in the CLF Cruise Gallery of it... I wish someone would post some better ones, as these that I took are not so good.
