alisa, lets see what brooke answers with. I'm there next month and I will check it out. He lives in talliwack, which is as I understand it, not that close to yvr. Or maybe he just is trying to get out of meeting with me, not sure.
I've been to YVR a few times, and I dont think I've noticed anywhere you can go and watch planes take off, but of course I'm not from the area and I could be wrong!
And he does live a bit of a distance from YVR and doesnt work in YVR either, so the drive to watch the planes take off and land is quite a distance for him... hm.....

I have been to Maho Beach - actually my brother got married at the Maho in 2004.
Yes, the beach is open to all. And the planes are amazing! Around 2 p.m. is when the BIG ones come in! Air France, KLM - all 747's.
I really liked the departing planes even more - they taxi right toward the beach and then turn around to take off away from the beach. Then they do what I call a brake torque, the planes are at a dead stand still and the engines are revving to full capacity and then they release the brakes and off they go! The runaway is not huge and the planes take off towards the mountains so they have to take off at a huge upward angle and then veer sharply to the right!
I spent all week watching these planes take off wondering how it was going to feel and was a very insense take off, not a nice gradual one like we are used to.
The Maho is surrounded by rocks and such and you can swim out to the them and do a little exploring. There is a beach hut by the beach to get food and drinks - but if you go into the grocery store that is across from the beach beer is only like $1 and you can buy just one and they have a bottle opener at the check out.
There is also an ice cream place across from the Maho and a Subway.
I would recommend spending the day there. I loved our week and can't wait to go back.
There is 2 places at YVR, one at the end of each runway, 26L and 26R. 26L even has a picnic area set up, this area is just west of Burkeville, a small community at the east end of YVR - attached is a map......

It's fairly loud, but not to bad, I would estimate you are still 1,000 yards from the end of a runway. We make a day of this trip, we pack a picnic, head down on a sunny day, and spend a couple of hours there. Then we will go into Vancouver, shop Robson, check out Canada Place and usually head over to Stanley Park for ship departures......makes for a great day

bs_outwest - your welcome for the info. Another word of advice, do not set your stuff down directly behind the planes - it will all blow away and so will you! It is quite funny to watch people run after all of their belongings though.
We parked our butts down and people watched - the locals like to ride their motorbikes through the blast of air and see if they can stay on !
I see you are in Vancouver - we are heading that way in July to take the kids to the Stampede. We want to fly into Vancouver and drive to Calgary. We have never travelled in Canada - how bad is that! But I so prefer the south and warm sun.
Another side note - in your pictures you can see a white gazebo in the background. That is where the wedding ceremony was held and a huge Air France landed right in the middle of the ceremony - you could not hear the minister at all!
