Car rental?

Anybody ever rent a car in St. Martin? How much, how easy, how far??? Can you rent ahead of time or just go booth to booth once the ship docks?

We've rented a car every time we've gone to St. Maarten.

As you get to the end of the pier, turn right and there will be several companies there. Rental rates run about $45 - $75 depending on the time of year.

You can either make reservations ahead of time or wait until you get there.

It's a great place to drive around - people are friendly and traffic is not a problem. We like to drive to Marigot to the outdoor flea market and the head over to Orient Beach for lunch and enjoying the beautiful beach.

Pete, do they drive on the same side of the road as we do here in the US? Or is it the left side? I have been there several times (not rented a car) but don't remember!

Same side of the road as us, which is strange when you figured half the island is Dutch and the other half is French.

I thought that it was only British islands that drove on the left side of the road.

Maybe I'm wrong. ??

Reggie,

I think that you are correct. The French and Dutch both drive on the "right" side of the road, just like we do here in North America.
It's usually the British colonies that drive the "wrong" : ) way. St. Croix is an exception. They drive like the Brits and don't have right hand steering wheels.(When I drive on the "wrong" side of the road, I like to remember that the driver is toward the center line. This doesn't apply in STX or on one way streets.)

This conversation is SO funny! LOL When my friend and I went to Ireland together, they drive on the opposite side of the road as us...so after I "fired" her from driving (she tried three times to pull out into the road and always ended up on the wrong side going in the wrong direction, so I did the driving for the week!) and we stopped using the words left or right but used words like your side of the road (or turning lane) or my side of the road...it worked MUCH easier for us!
