    St. Kitts Railroad!

We did this excursion in March with a group of friends. It was "interesting". Cute little old rickety train, good service, but you really don't see anything much of the island except the perimeter and the sugar cane fields, poverty-stricken villages and the ocean and a gazillion goats running wild in the vegetation!!!

We nicknamed it the "Goat Train". We actually enjoyed & learned more on the rides to & from the train than on the train.

I would not do it again, but I would say, if this is the kind of thing you are looking to see, it will be enjoyable, I think we were expecting more.

Thanks, Rosie, for the report! For sure ... we'll take a pass on this one!

You mentioned you learned more to & fro than on the train. Did you do a tour of the city on the way to the train? Did they serve drinks on the train? Were there any stops?

    Thanks Rosie,

We are still trying to figure out what to do in St. Kitts. Just can't make up my mind but you helped eliminate one!!

    Oh dilemma. What to choose??

    Hi LuLu!

It is about a 20-30 minute drive to/from the train by bus from the ship dock. As they drive all through the towns, the drivers comment on the points of interests and tell stories about the island.

Yes, they served margaritas & rum punch on tha train along with bottled water & sodas I belive. There are no stops. Not the worst tour I have been on, but certainly could have been only a hour tour from my perspective!!!

Several people did some catamaran sails that they said were wonderful, other than that, I didn't personally hear of anything but wandering around the shopping near the ship!

Thanks, Rosie! Sometimes I help my TA with recommendations for excursions in the Caribbean especially when she's dealing with groups of first time cruisers. I'm fairly good with the beach/catamarans ... but we don't normally do others so this was a BIG HELP!

I sent your review (with your latest reply) to my TA and she just replied with an email ... and wants me to say THANK YOU!

Like most people, we couldn't pass up the chance to do the train the first time to St. Kitts. The second time, we decided to just rent a cab for the day and have them drive us around the island - this was by far a MUCH better choice. Got to see more, spend more time, do more things, AND it cost much less.

Definitely do not recommend the train - get a cab for the day instead. Don't need to do a shore excursion that is a tour around the island - cost more and not worth it, plus it's very crowded. Do your own thing, you'll be much happier.

Yep! Learned alot. In fact, the sugar cane fields are subsidized by the government. But now, they realize there is more money to make in tourism, so the government has stopped subsidizing the sugar cane industry and decided to use the money to help build resorts and golf courses in an attempt to attract more tourism. Very pretty island.
