    Best Snorkel places?

Of all the places I've snorkelled, I think Trunk Bay in St John is the best. There is an underwater trail that you follow with directional blocks pointing the way and giving you information about the fish, the environment and more. Next time you cruise into St Thomas, it's really worth taking an excursion there if you like to snorkel.

I LOVE to snorkel, but must admit, I missed this when I was there!

Well, guess I'll just have to go back! hehe

BTW - Costa Maya snorkeling is awesome! Part of the barrier reef.

We enjoyed Cinnamon Bay also. Maybe not as many fish but it was less crowded. I did notice after the crowds left Trunk Bay, more fish came out and swam up to you.

Really great snorkelling of Grand Bahamas Island, near Freeport. It's just offshore from the big resorts, but lots of local entrepreneurs run excursions. Saw my first shark there. Kewl.

I think I snorkeled at Cinnamon bay. But snorkeling ANYWHERE on St. John is superb! We also snorkled on a small island between St John and St Thomas called Lovango Cay, which was almost as good. The easiest snorkeling was in Hawaii on the big island, I think the beach was Kahalu'u Park. It was SO easy that people who couldn't swim would stand in the water and put their face masks in the water and watch the fish. There were LOTS of kids for that same reason.

When we go anywhere in Hawaii, we rent snorkel gear for the time we are there. There are so many beaches for snorkeling, that we just drove around and snorkeled wherever. Next I want to snuba.

What made this snorkel place the best? This is one that we've been discussing taking in September. I hear that there's not many fish to see at Trunk Bay. Is that right? I've even looked into snuba at our St. Thomas/St. John's stop.

Carolyn, there were ALOT of fish when we were there but we were staying on the island. When there is alot of people around, like the ship's excursions, there are less fish because they are more intimidated by all the people, I think. We snorkeled while the people were there and then a little later after they all left and there were so many more fish, it was unreal. Still, Trunk Bay is noted as one of the top snorkel places in the world. I want to snuba, also. I can dive pretty deep with a snorkel but of course not for long, I'd like to stay down there longer.

I'm trying to learn to dive with the snorkel gear. I'm such a novice just in snorkeling. I'll take whatever advise you have on free diving that you have.

How long can you hold your breath? That's all it amounts to, then blow the snorkel tube out when you resurface. That's important to remember...when you RESURFACE, I wasn't thinking once and got a mouth full of water because the tube wasn't quite out of the water yet! Of course you can't do it in a vest, even with the air out of the vest they are too bouyant to dive in. Have you seen pictures of people snubaing? It's a really cool idea, you'd lose your freedom being attached to the air hose but I don't think I'd care that much about that.
