Hello All. Just got a D V D of the old Southern Pacific Daylight running from Portland Oregon to the Worlds Fair in New Orleans back in 1984 This was the old STEAM train # 4449. it shows the train crossing the long high bridge in Redding and Shasta lake, plus a great shot of Mt Shasta covered in snow, as an old goat that started work on a rail road in the U K back in 1936 I still enjoy watching and hearing the sounds of a steamer working listen as it talks to you and will say:"lets go see the other side of the hill?" But will settle for a Amtrak diesel because the scenery is the same and the pople who work on the trains (and the buses ) are the best. Have booked and waiting for my tickets down to LA next month to cruise on the Splendor, All the best to all Me
After reading this morning about all of the luggage fees on the airlines combined with the fact that Don starts work before the cruise ends but never has classes until month end we are considering the train back as well.
I hope you do so I will have company on the train back.
With 3 checked and 2 carryon per person it sure beats the hassle and expense of flying. I wouldn't really enjoy ending a wonderful trip in a plane with warm soda and a bag of peanuts.

Right on John, I hope you enjoy Splendor.
We want to hear all about it when you return.
John, sounds like a great DVD. You and Jackie are going to have a blast on the Splendor. My grandfather and my uncle both worked the railroads. My grandfather was an engineer on the Southern Pacific and my uncle an engineer on the Burlington Northern many, many, many years ago.
