I've heard people say that they contacted a taxi company in Barcelona and made arrangements with them ahead of time so that they could be picked up at the airport. Is this really necessary?
Am I going to have trouble finding taxis on my own when I leave baggage claim?
When you leave luggage claim, just walk outside and you'll see a taxi line. It's very orderly and there are dozens of taxis in line. Taxis are small by US standards are will accommodate only two people with luggage. They charge extra for luggage. We have visited Barca three times, always stayed on La Rambla. The taxi fare is around 25 euros for two, with six pieces of luggage, including tip. Make sure that you ahve euros, they don't accept US dollars or credit cards.
You'll love the cruise, we did it in 2004. It's breathtaking.

Yes, there is a taxi service you can arrange for in advance in Barcelona: Angie's Taxi. The website address for contacting her is: www.taxiinternacional.com She will TYPICALLY, but not always, respond within 24 hours. Give her a couple of days before re-emailing her if you don't receive a response; usually she is very prompt, though.
It is 60 euros for a van for 6 and a trailer for all the luggage, which is well worth it. There were six of us on our roll call thread who went together and reserved this service, bringing the cost to only 20 euros per couple to our hotel.
On our disembarkation day, there were two other ships in port besides ours, and it was a ZOO. People waited up to two hours in line for taxis. (Several others on our thread did this and were sorry they had not reserved a taxi in advance. It's no fun standing in a line with your bags for a couple of hours when it is warm and humid and you would rather be enjoying your vacation.) We were out of the port in less than 10 minutes!

Great advice, jbond. I would also add that it's a good idea to write down the name of your hotel, or the name of your ship and the port location if you're going straight to the ship.
The last time we went to Barcelona, our taxi driver spoke only Catalan, so the written hotel name was helpful.
Don't know if this will help with your specific question or not, but found it on the Costa website, and it seemed at least somewhat relevant, as it seems like good general information:
How to reach the departure port
For cruise passengers who arrive in Barcelona by air
From the Barcelona airport, the port can be reached by taxi in approx. 40-50 minutes at an average price of 25-35 Euro. Alternatively, there is a railway station inside the airport: get off at “Catalunya” or “Sants Estació” and take the underground (Line 3, green) to the station “Drassanes”, located at the bottom of the Ramblas, close to the monument of Christopher Columbus. From here, crossing the street in the direction of the sea, you will find a bus stop for the Port Bus, a small blue bus that will take you to the port; the bus stops at all port terminals.
