Both Princess and Orient have ships that actually visit Antartica on their itineraries, they are on the top end of cruise cost but considering what you do/see they are well worth the extra expense. The Marco Polo would have been around £3000 more than I paid for the Crown @ £3900.

Here are some other cruise lines:

    1) Clipper--Starts at $4185

    2) SilverSea--Starts at $2971

    4) MSC--Starts at $370 (best overall deal, IMO)

    5) Discovery World Cruises--Starts at $1500

    6) Costa Cruises--Starts at $459

    7) Seabourn--Starts at $4900

    8) Radisson--Starts at $5186

We leave in just over 1 month for a cruise on the HAL Rotterdam VI from Rio de Janeiro to Valpapaiso Chile. We are doing a pre cruise on our own trip to Iguasso Falls and a post trip to Macchu Picchu Peru. I am very psyched.

JC, that's sounds fantastic!!!!! I am hoping we can do Igazu Falls, but Macchu Picchu would be just too wonderful for words!

I hope you will post info about your cruise when you get back. Two things I am interested in are: 1-how cold does it get this time of year in the southern latitudes and 2- can you see the coast from the ship on days at sea? (In other words, is it worthwhile to get a room on the "shore side" of the ship, if you don't have an inside room?)

I will definitely write up a day by day account when I return.

Here is last years serialized post after our European vacation. Which I posted over at CC. If anyone is interested in Europe this is fun to read IMHO

JC, what are your ports of call on the Rio/Valparaiso cruise?

I am doing Valparaiso/Buenos Aires and it would be fun to compare your ports and how you felt about them and what you did there, to what I get upto on my cruise in December on NCL Crown.

It would make an interesting cruiseline/ship comparison too, perhaps?

Pagoda: Are those prices for the Antartica extension in USD or pound sterling? If they are USD then I won't be going to Antartica!! I am going to be asking a lot of questions when you get back from your cruise. How many formal nights, tux? etc. I suspect, given the time of year that it will be a slighly more seasoned traveller and that Tuxedos may be the norm for formal nights. That would great, but I don't want to drag it down there if I'm not going to be able to wear it.
    27 cruises and countin'!
Next cruise, July 12-26, 2008. NCL Jade 13 night cruise around the British Isles, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris.

The prices are in US$ and yes even with the current exchange rates, they are way out of my league. All the shorex are on the NCL website and some of them, such as the half day ones, run from about $40 a head. The Antartic is the most expensive of the bunch.

I am taking 2 posh frocks, one for Christmas Day and one to see the New Year in with, at the moment I am not sure if they will be the 'official optional posh' or not, if not I do have a couple of smart skirts in the case.

You are more than welcome to ask as many questions as you want to I should be back online after the 5th January. I get home after 24 hrs flying on the 4th and will probably curl up and sleep lol

My holiday consists of overnight flights each way plus 2 nights B&B in Sheratons at each end, so I might have rather a long drawn out report.....
