RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Gangs attacked buses and police posts in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday in a wave of violence that killed at least 18 people as the Brazilian city fills up with tourists for New Year celebrations.
Seven of the people were burned to death on a bus and nearly two dozen were wounded, said Rio state public security secretary Roberto Precioso, who blamed drug gangs and their jailed kingpins for 12 attacks across the oceanside city.

Until I read this article, I didn't know how bad things were there. Just like all the stops on cruises, you need to stay in the tourist areas and not wander into bad parts of town!
