Question Has anyone traveled "SOLO" on a Holiday cruise?

I am THINKING about doing the 12-day on HAL (Rotterdam) to Mexico - it leaves December 22nd and returns Januray3rd.

I have NEVER traveled over the holidays, let alone solo.

    Your thoughts?

Hi Tom: Have not traveled solo over a holiday, but a few years a ago did the week before Christmas, the crew members i spoke to said they hated the holiday cruises because many of the passengers were not very happy to be cruising with out loved ones. I think that if you have no one to celebrate the holidays with, then going on a cruise would at least have some others in the same fix.

    Go for it!!

You will love HAL and the Rotterdam. There will be a solo's get together -- lots of special events for Christmas and New Years. You won't be lonely on that cruise.

Also ask for Fixed (Traditional) dining and ask for a table of 6 - 8 so that you can get to know the same people each night.

The crew on HAL go out of their way to make everyone happy.

Thanks for your comments - I think I will pass on the holiday cruise for this year, BUT will find one in January/February - a lot cheaper.

Krazy Kruizers - I normally cruise HAL (solo) and couldn’t agree with your comments more - I always take the traditional seating late seat and large table and it has always worked out. The only problem is with HAL is there new policy of trying to get 200% from the solos.

On my last cruise, which was during the holidays, two of our tablemates were siblings and they both had separate cabins. They also seemed to be doing their own thing during the cruise as outside the dining room, we would run into one of them, and then later on, another. The sister was with us on a couple of the excursions. I think her brother just liked hanging out at the bar. One of them lived in California and the other lived in Oregon.

Can you not post a request to find someone to share your cabin. Do we not do that on here somewhere ?

We are taking a cruise over Christmas for the first time ever being away from our kids and grandkids. Of course I will be with my wife. We wrestled with the idea for a while. It will be an interesting experience.

Is there a better place to be?

I want to do a holiday cruise but right now it is all about the parents, they make a big stink about the holidays... Maybe after. <--- not trying to sound cold hearted there.

It seems like a fun way to celebrate the holidays, but being someone who works holidays and knowing how much I hate it - I worry the crew will hate it as well (making the cruise stink).

The one reason I would not cruise solo is the higher cost of the cruise fare over the Christmas holiday, specifically. It's bad when two are cruising much more when you get hit with the Single Supplement. I've cruise by myself once, but the supplement was not too much, and it was a January 22, 2009 short cruise on RCI.

It seemed from our holiday cruise that if some crew members weren't happy about working at that time and not be with their families, they kept it to themselves. And don't forget some of the crew members are from countries that don't celebrate Christmas.

I really liked being away from the holiday hubbub as I didn't have to fret over trying to find a parking spot at the store just to get essentials or gifts. You still get the music, food, etc. onboard many ships. The Island Princess was definitely decorated to the hilt and many people added decorations to their cabin doors.

Didn't even think it would not be a holiday for EVERY crew member... DUH... Your reason is one of the reasons I would want to travel during the holidays. Why get caught up in all that craziness.
