As of today, there are 2 cruise lines that, IMHO, discourage solo cruisers. NCL and Princess charge 200% supplements for single or solo cabins, as do many of the other cruise lines. The part that really ticks me off is that they also charge double port charges, which they have renamed NCF or non-commissionable cruise fare.
I have to agree about cruise lines not being real kind when it comes to solo guests.
One minor correction to your above post...Princess only charges 150% of the NCFs for solo passengers...not double. It's still a hefty penalty to travel as a single guest.

Maybe you should check with Princess, as the only difference between a single and double booking is the taxes and fees. The base cruise fare and port charges or NCF are charged at 200% for a solo cruiser. I have checked prices on 3 different sailings and that was the case in all of them. I questioned Princess about this and they verified that both the base cruise fare and NCF were charged at 200%.
As an example, the May 19, 2007 sailing of the Golden Princess is priced at
$2,192.16 cabin total, double. The single fare is $2,094.48. The difference is taxes and fees. The port charges or NCF, as I stated earlier are 200%.
It is possible that some Princess sailings are promo or flash priced at less than 200% cruise fare supplement for a single passenger and in that case, the port charges or NCF may also be at the lower level.

Well Rod, so gentlemanly of you to admit your error. But as I stated, the 3 bookings in the last week that I priced had the NCF pegged at 200%, not somewhere between 150 and 200%. I have priced many others and that has been the case with all of them also.
I realize you seldom get the same answer from the res agents at any cruise line,
but these were actual price quotes that I received on various sailings and itineraries.
Well I guess with your supporting documentation of your NCF showing at 200% and the supporting documentation I have showing my NCFs for my singles guests at 150% proves that Princess is giving me the correct answer.

Well, whatever it is, 150%, 200% or somewhere in between, we can agree that it is still more than most of the other mainstream cruise lines charge with the exception of NCL. It's something to consider when booking your next cruise.
LuLu I would suggest to her to become a member of a roll cal. While I have not traveled alone, I do know several people who have and found the roll call helped quite a bit.
Once she figures out what line. I would suggest for her to browse the net to find a lively and freindly roll call. This might help her chose the date if she has not already done so. Once she has become a part of the roll call she might wind up being able to request her booking to be linked with someone on the roll calls. Thus not dining totally alone.

When I go solo. that is 4 times, for the best deal its HAL. they charge me 130 %
compare to other cruise lines that charge 200% . its a good deal, and usually they will put you with other singles at supper time, give you a chance to meet other people.
