    AARP, is it any good?

I always throw their mail away, but today I was getting ready to toss it in the trash and noticed that members get discounts on hotels and cruises. Is this correct? Should I become a member? The cost is cheap, only $16 a year. Any feedback from any of you who are AARP members?

I am Gene. I do use it for hotels, Some say AARP & Senior, but some hotels only offer AARP. I stay at LQ every time and always use it and yes it is cheaper. Don't use the AARP for anything else tho
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

Discounts are good, but the organization also lobbies your government on seniors' issues.

    Hi folks,

I have been with AARP for awhile now. I was shocked when I turned 50 (10 yrs ago) when I started getting AARP addressed to me! What the heck? Me, a senior? I guess the salt color in my hair may be a clue!

Anyway, I use them for discounts at motels when I am on the road, heading for a port to cruise from. Hampton Inns, for example, honors the AARP discount.

    Be safe,

    Lee

While I am a member, I get the same or better discounts with my AAA card at hotels and the AAA card also gives me discounts at many attractions and restaurants. Many places have senior rates which are just as good without any memberships.

    Kirkz,

I was about to reply with similar information. I am a firm believer in AAA services, including taking advantage of their deep discount program.

Also, for anyone with a parent in the military as an officer or themselves, can use USAA, for more than just banking (which anyone can use) and the have 40% discounts on car rentals that I use religiously.

PS: I hope I didn't de-rail this thread...I just don't have any experience with AARP, yet!

Discounts are good, but I won't deal with them because of their politcal practices.

I cancelled my membership because of their politics.

Only used them for the 10% off on some hotels.
