LuLu, I think you've got the right idea, do those things now since you enjoy them so much!

You're doing well also if you can "hang" with the young'uns on those party boat excursions! I don't know when it happened, but DH and I now would opt to kayak vs. the party boat because we just can't drink and be real active at the same time anymore; so we have to pick between the two OMG, I think we may be older than I originally thought

Judy, think you're right! We have to pick and chose more than we once did!

Midnight buffets fall into this category..........

We quit doing the Midnight Buffets quite a while back too!

Wonder if anyone still does them? Are they so "Yesterday"?

The midnight buffets have lost their luster IMHO. It seems the ships are doing them more out of inertia than because they want a place to highlight their creative and artistic skills.

Also, I simply don't need all those calories late at night!

Another thing we very seldom do any longer is go to the "Captain's Welcome Aboard/Farewell Cocktail Parties" or to the "Repeat Passengers Parties"!

But you do go the the more limited parties for the semi-private meetings with ships officers, don't you? The ones for the people with the most cruises.

Most of the cruise lines aren't even doing the gala midnight buffets anymore. They are doing smaller themed poolside midnight buffets instead.

You are right but they are still major productions and they are still loaded with calories!

my experience

have been on 3 cruises, one in 93 on the SS Norway, which by the way is now beached off the coast of India , nobody wants to deal with it because it is full of asbestos.I went with a friend on that one and we did the whole thing, midnight buffet, dinner in the dining room etc...
the first one I went on with the DH was for our 10th anniversary and they upgraded us to a balcony( I am now a balcony snob) we went on Royal Carribean , out of San Juan and we had a ball. we didnt do the dining room, just the buffet and we enjoyed that so much more,
the one a year ago we went with 3 other couple and we did the dining room, we have decided that the next one we take, NO dining room.
we enjoy the freedom to eat when we want to and come and go when we want to.
we went on the Carnival Legend out of Tampa and I thought it pailed in comparison to the Adventure of the Sea's, but it was a heck of alot cheaper.
my 50th Birthday is next June and I was looking at the Carnival Victory out of San Juan in a 9A cabin, anyone done this cruise? would love some input
