We joined AARP when my dh turned 50 last year because when we go on the road showing dogs all the hotel we stay at offer AARP rates if you are a member and I have saved alot on hotel rooms in fact the membership paid for itself after I did a 4 night hotel stay at a Best Western last year when I was on the road showing dogs. In fact I going to find a hotel that gives AARP rates for our 3 night pre-crusie stay.

I have found that in checking hotel rates the AAA rates and AARP rates are usually the same.

WE have also found that the AAA and AARP rates aren't any different for hotels.

As was stated, normally AAA and AARP rates are the same, and trust me when I say I've tried all the discount rates I can find! My DIL calls me the King of Research!

As for cruise rates, if a cruise line is offering a Senior Rate, you can get this whether you're a member of AARP or not - makes no difference. There are no special rates just for AARP members.

What is AARP

AARP stands for "American Association of Retired People". Not all that costly. $12.50 for 1 year/$29.50 for 3 years and $39.95 for 5 years. You have to be at least 50 years old to belong. They offer a lot of services which you may or may not save money on. It is politically active Left leaning organization that lobbies for senior citizens. They can save you the cost of membership in many ways. They have a magazine which I believe is quarterly. I'm guessing as I have not been a member for quite a few years. Now that I am officially retired I may sign up again.

I heard that AARP used to give really good deals to members. For example, they would contract for a really good rate from an insurance company and you would order through AARP, which would pass the savings on to you.
Now, though, they still get the insurance for a great rate but they will offer it to members at what is often a rate non members can get elsewhere if they look around a bit. AARP keeps the added discount rather than passing it along to members.
