Diving while on a cruise was not easy in the old days...it was not on the list of shorex.
On our first cruise I asked the excurision people about diving and they did not know much about availability. They told me there was a shack on the beach where the ship had a beach party in Zihuatanejo that might rent equipment. It turned out there was and I wanted to try my first warm water dive. (without a wetsuit) Being of somewhat sound mind, I was not going to dive alone and asked for a guide. Well they had one available but he could not have been more that 12 years old and knew little english. We dove in bay that had a ring of rocks placed around the ocean side to keep sharks out. At one point my guide picked up a snake and tried to hand it to me. I remembered something my dive instructor have drilled into us. "if you do not know what it is, do not touch it!" I waved off the offer of the snake. I found out later that most of the snakes there are poisonous. I did enjoy the dive... and then the beach party.
Wow!! So exciting John!! Why do rocks keep sharks out?? Too close to the surface?? Scary about the snake!! Thanks John!!!
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

The rocks were piled up to just below the surface. It was done long ago so that the local princess could have a place to safely swim.

I've been diving for about 36 years, off and on.. I taught my wife and she got certified the summer before last.. On cruises though, we mostly snorkel, although several time we broke down and rented equipment and did some.. The water is so clear and in most cases shallow enough that snorkeling is adequate enough to see everything...
Great!! We want to hear stories about your dives!!

I am not a diver, but remember a story from a guy at work who went to caribbean several years ago. He had a problem with his rental equipment. The regulator failed as did the backup (or it didn't have one). Luckily someone nearby (in the group?) came to hep him. He ended up sharing air with someone to get to the surface. They were too far down that when his equipment failed, he couldn't simply go to the surface (too quick of pressure change). He said that from then on, he always took his own regulator and would never rent one again.
This was several years ago. I don't even know if they would let you bring your own regulator to attach to the rental tanks, since I am not a diver myself.

We love to cruise and know we are certified divers. We are going to the Eastern Caribbean in December. We want to dive in each port. The ship is not offering a scuba tour in St Kitts and Antigua. Anyone dive in those spots??

I would love it if you would be nice enough to post some feedback about your dives. I am leading a dive group next year to ports in the Eastern Caribbean, and although I have been diving in St. Kitts, St. Lucia and in St. Thomas, diving in Antigua and Barbados will be a first for me and my group. I am going to assume if you are not already on your cruise, you willbe soon. Bon Voyage!

I am currently in the process of getting certified for scuba diving (NAUI), I had taken courses in 1998 but didn't complete them. I would like to get certified before I go on another cruise.
