Mayagüez aims to emerge in central Caribbean cruise strategy

Looks like we might have to add a new sub forum for Puerto Rico and place the San Juan forum inside - and then add one for Mayaguez.

Have a peek at this Seatrade article, after the recent FCCA meeting - there's been some talk of new Caribbean port development.

From Seatrade: "If San Juan is the hub for cruises to the Eastern and Southern Caribbean, fellow Puerto Rican port Mayagüez aims to emerge as the heart of the ‘central Caribbean.’ Its beacon would be the world’s largest statue of Christopher Columbus, a gift from Russia that is taller than the Statue of Liberty.

The central Caribbean swath could encompass the Turks & Caicos, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba, go eastward to St. Maarten and Antigua or cut south to Aruba and Curaçao where an additional incentive is more affordable bunkers."

Has anyone visited this region of Puerto Rico? What do you think interest level is around these refined Central Caribbean itineraries that such a port could provide?

    other port

Mayaguez is neat and there is plenty to see and do but I dont think that it will ever be as popular as San Juan...
My desires are that not only Mayaguez could be an important port but also the southern port of Ponce....
