    Smile Hotels in San Juan

My wife and I are cruising out of San Juan next year and we were wondering if anyone could suggest a nice hotel for a 1 night pre-cruise stay. Preferably close to the pier.

    Thanks!!

It depends on which port you are sailing out of, the one in Old San Juan or the Pan American Pier.

If you are sailing out of Old San Juan, there is a Hilton right across the street from the ship. It is about a 5-10 minute walk.

The Pan American Pier is where most cruiselines have embarkation. I'm pretty sure that only the ships that come to San Juan as a port of call are docked in Old San Juan.

For a 1 night pre-cruise stay, there is more to do in Old San Juan within walking distance of various hotels then around the Pan American Pier area.

If you are taking the Carnival Victory you might find the old San Juan Sheraton to be perfect. There are other hotels in the old city and you can see them at gotopuertorico.com
This site sometimes has special offers. Its the Puerto Rico Toursit Board.
If you still need more ideas let me know.

Inexpensive place to stay in San Juan

My wife and I are schedule to sail Adventure of the Seas next April and we are looking for a not too expensive place to stay precruise.

This will be our first time visiting Puerto Rico and we are basically looking for just some place to rest our heads for the night.

    Thanks in advance

We have our very own tour guide in San Juan. Here is his website.

You can also pm him here and he will get back to you.

    His name is Victor.

I used his tour while in San Juan and if you are thinking of doing a tour there, he is your guy!

There are some ships that still dock at the Old San Juan piers, and the Sheraton San Juan is very close by. You could walk. However, if you are on a larger ship, it will need the space provided at the Pan American Pier, about 3 miles away. The Pan-American pier is in an industrial area, and there are no hotels in walking distance. You are going to need a taxi to get to that pier no matter where you stay.

There are some resorts that may be a bit closer or about the same distance as the Sheraton in Old San Juan, but then you are forced to only eat in the hotel or at another hotel nearby.
The map on this website shows that the Caribe Hilton is the closest:
San Juan Piers and Hotel Aerial and FAQs
I remember seeing it on the way to our cruise and thinking, "Gosh, there is nothing else here! Glad we stayed in town." There is a Comfort Inn and a Holiday Inn Express in the area as well, but I don't know what kind of neighborhoods they are in, or what restaurants are nearby for dinner. (There is other info on that website, but I don't know how up to date it is.)

When we sailed on Adventure OTS, we stayed at the Sheraton on Old San Juan and were very comfortable there. And I do recommend you spending some time in the town - it is lovely. While the hotel has some restaurants, you can get something to eat in walking distance to the hotel, and it should be less expensive - and probably better. Another thing we were close to was a Waldgreen's, where we picked up everything we forgot to pack (it was our first cruise).

    For BigdaddyK -
We loved our cruise on Adventure OTS, it got us hooked on cruising. I liked that there was so much to do, but we never felt compelled to do a thing. We loved Cafe Promenade and loved our balcony. I really enjoyed our itinerary (Aruba, Curacao, St. Martin and St. Thomas) - it was a nice mix of history, fun activities and shopping. And we were both moved by the picture of the ship's Godparents - 4 New York City police and firefighters, who survived the Sept 11 attacks on the city.

Good luck to both of you on finding the hotel that's right for you.
