    San Juan Passengers.....?

This has been bothering me for some time. I have read several reviews about the San Juan departures and how the cruise lines "fill up the ships" by giving huge discounts to the locals. Now I understand that RCCL does not discount, please correct me if I am wrong. I am not sure about the other lines......

Also, the reviews complain that the San Juan passengers are unruly, loud and obnoxious. Now I have never been to San Juan, but my travel experience is such that I have found unruly, loud and obnoxious travellers everywhere. And not only travelling, but I mean everywhere.

Am I worried about nothing? I hope that the people that have had a San Juan departure can advise.

IMHO, we must treat others with the respect they deserve, and that that respect will be returned. I do not expect perfect behaviour from anyone, especially while on a vacation and having the time of their lives.

    Any experiences would be appreciated.:headbang2

I also have read about this. I can't remember which cruise line. It was pretty bad.

As far as a cruise line not discounting, well this may or may not apply. From what I recall the pricing was only available to PR. The cruise lines can do whatever they want!

Maybe I can help. We sailed out of San Juan in January on the Golden and last year on the Destiny. Both times the ships did have an exceptionally large number of locals onboard, in fact, the ship announcement were in english & spanish. The Golden was mostly an older group but the Destiny had alot of preteens, teens and early 20's pax. I never saw any "loud, unruly or obnoxious passengers on either ship. There were alot of kids on the Destiny that seemed to be "unsupervised", but no trouble of a roudy nature. A TA told me it is true that the ships offer "local resident discounts" to fill up the ships and then make their money on the alcohol and onboard purchases. Honestly, the envoirnment was no where near uncomfortable.

Thanks for the info, it eases my concerns. Again, I think people will find the unruly's everywhere, the best thin to do is make the best of it!
    Thanks again, Mschif.

We have never sailed from San Juan but we were there last year and it was lovely...I think you are right....you can find 'loud' people anywhere. I hope you have a great trip!!!

    Sailing from SJ

I guess SJ is no different than other ports...you find a lot of local folks sailing from Port Canaveral, Galveston, etc. If I was an hour from a major port I would be on a cruise ship constantly!
I understand that fewer locals are found on the longer cruises (over 7 days). We are sailing the 11 day on Empress in April, so we shall see...

We sailed out of San Juan on the Destiny - and didn't really notice a huge influx of locals.

I thought Old San Juan was beautiful (we spent 3 extra days there). And the people were very friendly!
