I would probably grab a cab to Old San Juan and do a little walk/window shopping around the old streets. And only for a couple of hours. But we spent 3 days there before our cruise in '03, and got to see all the forts that DH wanted to explore.
If you've never been there before, you might not be comfortable doing this, since you would not be familiar with the streets, etc. I recommend looking at the ship's excursions and seeing what sounds interesting. With only 4 hours, you do not want to take a chance that an outside excursion company would not get you back in time.

Hi
Don't waste any of your four hours visiting the Bacardi factory.
I did this as an shore excursion, and I found it to be a total waste of time and money.
I think that Old San Juan is wonderful for strolling. The architecture is beautiful.
If your ship is docked at the Old San Juan piers, finding you way back to the ship shouldn't be a problem.
The old forts are worth a visit, and the views are stunning.
San Juan is a wonderful city. Have fun!
We don't have our airfare or hotel booked yet, but are planning to go down a day or two early for our Serenade sailing in November.
Once we have firmed up our travel plans, and know how much time we'll have, I know I can come here for some expert advice on what to do and see!
I agree with Kyle........we really enjoyed Old San Juan......very historical and very beautiful if you like that type of thing.
Old San Juan is cool and if you want to: check out Senor Frogs!
Is Old San Juan safe to walk around? I've heard some stories about San Juan...
During the day, I would have no problem walking around Old San Juan. At night, there is one neighborhood (La Perla) to stay away from, and in general, it is better to stay in lighted areas. If you do take the Bacardi tour, under no circumstances should you walk around there. Not the nicest part of the city.
Treat San Juan the way you would treat any other city. If someone follows you too closely, cross the street. If they cross the street, walk into a store. Keep your purse closed. Watch for traffic. Watch for beggers, etc.

Thanks. I wanted to see at least a little bit of San Juan since we've never been there. No interest in the Bacardi tour since my neighbors took it last year and weren't impressed, and we're traveling with my DS14. Just didn't want to stay on the ship and treat it as another sea day. I want to get a little flavor of Puerto Rico! (Now, if only Ricky Martin could be there to show me "his Puerto Rico"!)
I'm told there is a Coach outlet in Old San Juan. I plan to go there!!
