On our first cruise we hit the rainforest for most of the day (fantastic) and only got a little while to walk around the city. As the othert posters have said, the architecture is beautiful. Two cautions, though. The city is built on a hill so there is a lot of uphill and downhill walking. You don't have to go a great distance to get tired if you are not in shape. Second, the city closes quite early so if you want to see the stores you need to do so by 6-ish. The cruise lines definitely push certain shops, you can do just as well elsewhere.
Four hours is not really enough time to experience Puerto Rico but it is just such a convenient spot for a quick landing although you generally do reach it at the end of the day (dang it!)
I recommend going to Old San Juan. Four hours would be enough time to see what you wanted to see there. Unfortunately, San Juan is my LEAST favorite port to sail out of. Both times I've been there, I've had unpleasant experiences. I do have to admit, however, Old San Juan is pretty interesting and worth the trip to see.
We really enjoyed San Juan.. We took an Old City / New City tour which also took us to 2 forts, a rum distillery, and downtown shopping.. Lousy beer there though....
Definitelly go to Old San Juan and visit Castillo El Moro. I have been there many times and never get enough. Its a best place for feel spirit of the old colonial Spanish times.
OK, maybe not everybody is interested in that themes but I like it very much.
We went up to Fort Morro. You may want to take a cab if you're not used to walking up a steep grade, if you go there.
How close can a cab get to the fort?
I have asked this question on other boards and I was always told you had walk up. No way a member of our group can make this walk. It is entirely too far especially in that heat. Did you actually get the cab to drop you off right at the Fort?
From what I remember (we were there four years ago and my memory isn't what it used to be), there is a long walkway. But I think up to that point, you can drive up the hill (and it is a steep hill). If you have mobility problems, this would probably not be a good choice for you. We left our daughter on the ship so it was the two of us walking the whole way.

So guess the consensus is the fort. We shall put this on our list. Thanks for all the info.
