Great Tip Lulu...How much is the taxi from the port to old town?
Lulu is correct, if you are on a Carnival Family ship (Princess, HAL, etc), and a few other lines. Their piers are just across the street from the Sheraton Old San Juan, and there are somethings in walking to the ship (Senor Frogs and the restaurants by Plaza de Colon [Columbus Plaza] for example). Celebrity and Royal Caribbean use the Pan American pier, which is closer to the beach resorts, but is still very close to the Old town. Taxi fares will be a little more, but you are still talking about a short ride.
I want to thank all those cruisers who wrote here about San Juan about not liking it. I love it because I live here. We have summer all year not having the change of weather like most of the countries of the world. If you dont like San Juan, PR, it's your problem, not mine. I won't miss it, you will.

We loved old San Juan as a port of call. We walked out to El Morro (good exercise) and then walked all over El Morro itself. It's very interesting and very photogenic!
We then walked back to the ship slowly, checking out the little shops of interest.
IMHO it was better than other days in other Caribbean Ports.

I've not been to San Juan yet, but looking forward to it in February 07 . I have heard a often that people don't like the stop, but it sounds interesting to me. Here's a website that has some info you may find of interest.
I haven't been to San Juan as part of a cruise, but I have been there a day or two before a cruise. I have to say touring Old San Juan was my favourite "excursion". The old world feeling, the cobble stoned streets, the little shops, the pastel coloured buildings - it's just wonderful to see.
There is another great restaurant that I would recommend - Barrachina - they boast the best pina coladas and the food is great too. Here is their website so you can check it out: www.barrachina.com.
