The Exploritorium

The Exploritorium

If you teach physics or science or just have a curiousity about things, this is for you.

I have a problem living here and explaining this place. You will be transformed.

Some years ago, my daughter did some vol work there while in high school. Then later she did a study of lichens and the various color dyes that could be made from those in San Francisco. Then she did some basket weaving using complicated polynomial formula. She has an mfa in textiles and a minor in math. They put it all in a book about basket math.

Robert Oppenheimer is known as the father of the atomic bomb. His brother, Frank, is the father of the Exploritorium. aka "The Explo". To all the people at the Explo, he was just Frank.

They teach the teachers. And they are very good at it.

Residents have "free days". So, there is no reason not to take the kids. In fact, almost all of the major things have a free day.

My dad visited from Oklahoma before he died and was totally taken with the Explo. One comment was, "Just think of what you could do with a well equipted junk yard and a half dozen inspired science teachers".

I would love to have comments from any one who has visited. It is really quite a place.

It is the palace of fine arts.

The outside of the building itself is worth a photo tour.

When I think of the Palace of Fine Arts, I think of the architectural structure out by the lake.

Isn't the Exploritorium the building that is there next to where the cars park?

I am not sure that they are considered two seperate things. Although they certainly are. I think of the dome as an enterance to the building. But, what you say sounds quite correct. More so than what I have said. I include a link to the explo and offer it as both enlightenment and a source of confusion. it clearly supports your comment.

Also fodor's guide supports your comment. Free open 24 hours is certainly the outside of the building housing the explo and would include the dome.

I also will include a map of the entire exhibition just as soon as I can find it. I think it is on the library site. Back soon.

Photo Link to the library. What has happened is that when the structure and the dome were originally built, the area where the lake is WAS the enterance to the palace and the dome was the portal.

But I still have to find the map. Back soon.

Map of the exposition. Not the copy I wanted but clear enough. The explo is in the Palace of Fine Arts and the dome is the enterance.

Hi

Until I found the map, I questioned my own thought. I had heard, but did not have the proof.

What I am saying is that I am glad you questioned my statement. Before then it was just more "tribal legend". And I was just mouthing what i had heard.

Thanks
