Ruth's Chris is always great, but it's not uniquely San Fransican. We have one up the road from here!
Save a Lizard, ride a Horse.
excuse me Texashorselady.. I didnt see where the OP asked for uniquely San Fransican.. I thought they only asked for great resturants in SF![]()
You are right...Ruth's Chris is a great restaurant in SF. I don't expect everybody to feel the same as I do...but my little habit is when I travel I try to find something that represents the local flair and character. BUT in any case, Ruth's Chris is certainly a great steakhouse in SF...no doubt about it!Originally Posted by JoeyandDavid

I have not eaten at Ruth's Chris. The reputation is that of fine food. This is not just recent but long standing.
Should be quite enjoyable.
The demographics of an area are always interesting before you wander in and find yourself in an uncomfortable situation.
When we (Rose and I) bought our home back in '66 most of the neighborhood was retired craft or labor folks. About 65%. Now that has changed to most of the people being young late 20s to early 40s, professional and about 60% with advanced degrees. Lots of young kids. There were actual stroller traffic jams at the library.
So to dining.
How about some breakfast Savor on 24th Street has an international flair. The king and queen of Jordan have eaten there. It is at 3915 24th Street (Near Sanchez).
Want a regular down home type diner with a counter? Herb's Fine Foods will serve you an honest stack of hotcakes, bacon, ham, eggs, etc. Always popular.
Savor is good for lunch.
Barney's is a hamburger place popular with just about everyone. They make the designer burgers. Avacado, cream cheese on a burger type fare. Really nice for a change.
Pizza - Pizza in Noe Valley is Haystack between Sanchez and Church on 24th. I once took a co worker from NYC there. By his own claim, he was a pizza biggot. He loved their pizza. They really know how to make the dough just right.
There are other pizza places Noe Valley Pizza is good. Cybella's is very good and often the one of choice when we order out.
This is just the north end of my neighborhood.
The Castro is just over the hill from Noe Valley and chock full of fine places to eat. I must gather some biz cards from those merchants. If you are a train buff, and lots of folks are, take the "f" car from Fishermans Wharf to the Castro. The cars are from all over the world and at the end of the trip will be some of the best shopping to be found in the city. A photo in front of the Castro theater is a great memory of your visit. Lots of dining....Lots.

Wow Ed, thanks for the link to the ferry building. I hadn't seen the renovation, and am so pleased. I wish my dad could have lived to see it. He emigrated to San Francisco from Copenhagen in 1921 and worked there until he retired in 1965. he used to tell us what the building was like. I have wonderful pics circa 1933 --pics of SanFrancisco when Golden Gate park was dunes, the Arboretum was seedlings, and pics of the GG bridge at various stages of completion. Also the Fleishacker pool, which I guess was really something.
I am more and more convinced. I need to go home for a visit. Probably cant find my way around any more.

I will just close out a few things here and then I will open threads for different discussions. One of course is the Golden Gate Park. So if you have old photos of the park, you might want to pm Lee about posting.
I will use lots of links to other parts of the city.
Gotta run. Briall needs to be walked to school. The granddaughter.
