Lori's is a chain of 50s style diners. It' right off Union Square and very popular with the tourists. DSW is just down the street for those of us who are shoeaholics.
The Irish House is just around the corner and serves great pub-fare and a block away is Kuleto's, and upscal Italian place. Up two blocks is Farallon. A fabulous seafood joint with the most amazing hand-blown glass jellyfish chandeliers! Food galore in SF!

Cable cars are a must. I go to San Francisco at least once a year. I used to go about 6 times a year. We always try to fit in a cable car ride. Best to catch it up by Nordstroms above Union Square and ride all the way down to Fisherman's Warf. Great view and fun.
Coit Tower is cool. It is a tower built to honor the firemen. It is way up on a hill and has some good views. It also has a lot of historic significance and gives you a good, brief history of the city.
The DeYoung Museum is a fantastic museum in San Francisco. Recently reopened after major renovations.
Muir Woods is close to the city and offers an excellent Redwoods' experience. The California Redwoods are a must see. Huge, towering trees several hundred years old.

There's also the adjunct to Pier 39...about 13 years ago, the sea lions began taking over the docks surrounding the pier. The locals became outraged because the oils from their skin would eat through the wood. Finally, the city decided to build permanent fixtures for the sea lions...now they lounge around all over the perimeter of Pier 39...it's a great attraction and even the locals are more appreciative of it (especially the merchants! )
The Haight is also pretty cool. Haight/Ashbury was the center of the world of hippies. The area is still very hip with lots of cool shops and restaurants. It is similar to Melrose in Los Angeles.
