Here's more info about the LRAD, from the company that makes it:

    http://www.atcsd.com/lrad.html

    The Sound of Force Protection®

The Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) is a breakthrough long-range hailing and warning device designed to communicate with authority, affect behavior and determine intent. It has the unique ability of providing amazing voice and tone clarity in a 15° - 30° beam at distances over 300 meters using only two amps of power. In addition to microphone input, LRAD can communicate in various languages via the built in MP3 player or Phraselator.

As a method for safely addressing the difficult missions of waterside force protection against small boats, crowd control, area denial of personnel, clearing buildings and visit board search and seizure operations, LRAD puts distance between a potential threat and our troops to save lives on both sides of the device. LRAD can also be configured to provide live, continuously recorded video and audio from a remotely controlled ruggedized pan, tilt and zoom mount for high value infrastructure “first responder” capability.

    Features:
    • Clear and intelligible voice communications

    • Attention-getting and highly irritating warning tone for behavior modification

    • All-weather operation

    • Minimal power requirements

    • Flexible audio input/user interface

    • Available pan/tilt remote operation
    Supported Missions:
    • Waterside Force Protection

    • Crowd and riot control

    • Area denial of personnel

    • Building clearing operations

    • Psychological operations

    • Visit board search and seizure

    • Critical Infrastructure Protection

    • Ground/mechanized offense/defense operations

There is one additional product in the LRAD family that is currently in development:

ERAD— Extended Range Acoustic Device, supports very long distance communications for the critical infrastructure and border AT/FP security market.

I think cruise ships should be outfitted with a few Phalanx guns and a few well armed highly motivated USN SEALS

While none of them were cruise ships, the US Naavy has in the last WEEK freed FIVE ships from Somali pirates.

Piracy IS on the increase in certain waters... and the cruise lines are wisely avoiding these areas.

There was an interesting article on piracy in the Smithsonian magazine a few months back. Luckily the pirates are getting more and more attention of the US Navy and others.

Yep. SMART Pirates sure don't want to run up against the might and power of the US NAvy, that's for sure!

They really need to find another line of work that is nicer than piracy. If they were my sons, I would be thoroughly ashamed of those creeps

For some of the countries, it is an honorable (!) profession. Most of the pirates are younger men who have no idea what they are doing - or understand the consequences (death in some countries)
