    Thumbs up Rule of Thumb

On a recent cruise the cruise director reminded us several times that we would be making port stops in places where the majority of the people were quite poor so to be mineful of this when going ashore.

His Rule of Thumb: Never wear a watch or jewelry that is worth more that than most make in a year.

    Still, many did!

What are YOUR thoughts on this?

That rule makes sense to me.

Its a very good rule, though only common sense.

I do not wear jewelry off the ship except for a plain gold wedding band and pearl earrings. Sometimes I don't even wear a watch. If I do, it is a Timex! I don't want to tempt anyone!

In fact, I don't bring my "good" jewelry on a trip except for my diamond wedding ring. Everything else is "fake".

My rule of thumb is not to carry anything I can't afford to loose. I wear my wedding band. If you want that you will have to take my finger.

Just a note, 20 years of dealing with toursits in Jamaica and crusiers are among the most insensitive, most unprepared. Some truly think ever local is there to entertain and make their day better. I now have a shirt saying Iree Mon Jamaican....I Am On Vacation Too!

I'm not a big jewelry wearer. Usually only my wedding ring is of any real value. My watch was on sale for just dollars --could have been even less, but I prefer analog. My earrings are costume-level. About the one thing I could really improve on is remembering to bring a plain ring band for when in port.

On the ship I wear what I always wear at home every day.

We have Swatch watches for shore excursions. If they don't come back, no big loss.

Other than a Swatch watch, on shore stops I wear absolutely NO other jewelry including a wedding band. Guess I'm "living in sin" for the day!

LuLu, if you snorkel, scuba or are in the water for most of your excursions, it's better to not wear any sparkly jewelry since that can attract fish Some do have sharp teeth

I have a black underwater watch for this reason, but I am guilty of wearing my wedding band since it feels like something is missing the whole time if I don't.

This topic reminds me of what I relayed to my friend when we were going on the Med cruise. She has an extremely expensive diamond ring and wears some major yellow gold bling so I told her to leave it all home since I didn't want to get targeted based on her jewelry.

She left her expensive bling home, but went out and bought all sterling silver bling with CZ's to wear in place of it She had to remove it all going through airport security and since she doesn't travel much she put it all in one of the dog bowls so she worried about it and we all had to keep our eyes on the bowl

I put everything that needs to come off/out of pockets for a security check into my purse, even DH's wallet, coins and keys if he's with me. Easier to keep an eye on a bag that has the items inside instead of lose things in a bowl.
