Question No formal nights on Ryndam Jan 2 to Jan 8, 2012, six day cruise

Two weeks ago we printed our online boarding passes for the first cruise of our B2B cruises on the Ryndam. It's a seven day cruise with two formal nights and five smart casual nights. Last week we were able to print the documentation for the 6 day second cruise. We were very surprised to learn it will have no formal nights and only smart casual nights! This seems odd to us, especially from HAL. What do you think?

I would think that at least one night would be formal. How very strange.

I agree, that does sound very strange. I would have my agent check on that for you and verify that information. Be interesting to find out if that's true or not.

It is clearly marked on our boarding passes. There is a couple more dam ships (Nieuw Amsterdam and Westerdam) with 6 day cruises right after New Year and they all are Smart Casual only--no formal nights.

We like formal nights. It's kind of like attending the senior's prom! One of our ballroom dance clubs we belong to is formal. The club was originaly formed during the big band era of the 40s.Tuxedos for the men and long gowns for the women. Well, it used to be like that. We just relaxed the rules to allow dark suites and ties and tea length dresses. We did this because the membership was shrinking fast. It seems the younger crowd likes to be less formal. Some of our late members are probably turning over in their graves.
We see this happening on cruise ships. it would not surprise us to see formal nights end on most lines.

Our 5 night cruise on Celebrity had a formal night. On our 10 day on HAL three years ago, they had all but done away with formal night. Suits were actually suggested but even that was not required.
