Here is what I can tell you.
Roatan is one of those rare places where you can actually SWIM OUT to the barrier reef from the beach, so no need for an expensive tour. Just take your own equipment, and you are home free.

There is a place called Half Moon Beach (or Half Moon Bay???) that has a beach, a restaurant, snorkel equipment rental, and some good snorkeling. I am told that you need to swim out 50-100 yards to see a spectacular 'drop off.' the time I was there, we only had a few minutes there, so I stayed closer in for fear of getting left, but I wish I could have had more time there, and hope to one day.

Zydecocruiser has snorkeled several times at Roatan, and hopefully, will happen by shortly to share more with you.

By the way, the water is spectacular there!!!!

I came to Roatan on a Carnival Cruise, fell in love with the island, found it to be one ofthe most affordable places in the Caribbean. Then bought property and moved here immediately-- that was 2 years ago (2007) and I'm NEVER leaving! It's beautiful, laidback and the people are truly awesome......... COME VISIT ROATAN... and stop by Tiki HOT Island Shop to visit me!

In your opinion, where is the best snorkeling from the beach? My husband had knee replacement and cannot do boat tours so we need a place to snorkel from the beach.

i really like this place. we went to west beach, which is not the best place to snorkel but has a really beautifull beach with great sand.
also beach bar that serves 5 honduran beers all very good.

it is however a good place to kayak from.
