Carnival to build terminal here.
Just got our Cruise Travel magazine today. There is an article in it about Carnival Corporation and plc signing an agreement to build and operate a cruise terminal on the island of Roatan. Development of the facility is to be called Mahogany Bay - Roatan and work is expected to be started in the fall of 2007 and to be completed by the summer of 2009 at a cost of $50 M.
The cruise facility will be situated on 20 acres on the waterfront. It will consist of a 2 birth cruise terminal capable of accommodating the largest post-Panamax vessels and up to 7000 passengers.
Adjacent to the facility will be a 35,000 square foot Welcome Center. There will be shops, restaurants and bars. There will also be a 60 foot high lighthouse, a lagoon cascading waterfalls and a nature trail.
A transportation hub with the ability to accommodate taxis, rental cars and tour buses is also being planned. A variety of shore excursions to be provided by local tours operators is also being developed.
