    Cameo Factory - Roatan, Honduras

    Roatan, Honduras - Cameos.
A very popular item to bring back from a cruise to Roatan, Honduras, is a hand crafted cameo.

The Castle of Cameos is about a mile from where the ships dock in Coxen Hole, Roatan, Honduras.

Here's the introduction on the home page of the above-referenced website:

When in 1851 my great grandfather, Andrea, opened his first workshop in the old city of Naples, the machine was hand operated. The young shop assistant would crank the wheel while the apprentice poured the water slowly over it to keep it cool.

Thanks to the efforts of my grandfather and father, Francesco, we have been able to develop and maintain excquisite craftsmanship. During these one hundred fifty years we have expanded beyond cameos and corals.

We also create hand made bracelets, rings and necklesses in bullion, gold and silver. Each of our signed pieces are one of a kind and the attention to detail and exquisite craftmanship of each work of art is unmistakeable. This art is the result of four generations of enriching experience and dedicated effort to preserve this tradition of fine craftsmanship. With our small, unique production, we can also provide custom cameos to your needs. We await your visit.

    NOT a Souvenior shop!

I've not been here, but would really love to bring back one of these small and delicate, yet intricately hand carved works of art.

From what I've read, the fact that this is generally referred to as a Cameo "Factory" is probably misleading. You can see the cameo artists at work here - and these ARE works of art, not plastic imitations.

Apparently, a true cameo artist is a rarity in the Western hemisphere, so this is something special and unique that Roatan has to offer.

Others have also advised to buy your cameo from them UNset, and have it set once you get home.

If I can tear myself away from the orphanage in time this May, I hope to get by there!

That's right - true cameos aren't your normal souvenier trinkets - they are tiny works of art!

AND, you CAN have them signed by the artist - you may need to ask that they do that, however.

Dolores - are you SURE you can't go with us in May?

Well, once again we went to Roatan, and missed the Cameo Factory.

(Similarly, I always have my snorkel and mask in my bag, but haven't gotten to use them the last two times!)

    Maybe next time!

Meanwhile . . . has anyone else made it there?

Information for Cruise Passengers (from the Cameo Factory website):

Tired of the same old shore excursions? During your stop on Roatan, visit the only Cameo Factory in the Americas! Enjoy watching master craftsman create both classical and modern cameo masterpieces. And don't forget that you will be paying factory direct prices, which is unheard of in the world of cameo art.
For each cruise ship visit, you can see our representative just outside the dock, who will help you get a taxi or bus to our location, which is just five minutes away. Or, if you like, we have a printable version of our map. The Castle Gallery of Cameos is on the same road where the cruise ship docks, which is the Gravel Bay/Flower's Bay road. Just turn left (West) at the road and look for the sign and castle on the right. It is about a mile, just before Flowers Bay.
